SACRED PORTUGAL
April 12–23, 2027 12 Days / 11 Nights

A Journey into the Ancient Soul of the Land.

Portugal holds mysteries far older than its castles, churches, and kingdoms.  Beneath the Portugal we know today lies another landscape, one shaped by ancient peoples who gathered around stones, entered caves, honored the dead, watched the heavens, walked sacred mountains, and recognized the living presence of the Earth.

Over twelve days, we journey through these many layers of sacred Portugal: from Lisbon's ancient streets to the enchanted forests of Sintra, from the Black Madonna overlooking the Atlantic to the mysteries of the Knights Templar, from caves and Marian apparition sites to the granite world of ancient Lusitania, the megalithic landscapes of Évora, and finally the wild meeting of mountain and ocean at Arrábida and Cabo Espichel.

This is not simply a journey to sacred places.
It is a journey into relationship with the land itself.

Picture

Portugal is a land of veiled mysteries, where ancient stones still remember, sacred wells descend into the Earth's womb, and symbols carved centuries ago seem to speak directly to those who know how to listen.

Here, beneath Templar crosses and star-filled skies, along paths once walked by mystics, pilgrims, queens, and initiates, another Portugal reveals itself, one rarely encountered by the ordinary traveler.

Sacred Portugal is an invitation to cross that threshold.  To enter places where the visible and invisible worlds seem to touch. To follow an ancient thread of mystery from sanctuary to sanctuary.
And to awaken something within you that may have been waiting, perhaps for lifetimes, for this journey.

ITINERARY
April 12 - 23

DAY 1 | LISBON
The Threshold, Answering the Call

Arrival in Portugal • Opening Circle • Welcome Dinner

Our journey begins in Lisbon, where river, ocean, history, and human longing have met for thousands of years.
Today is intentionally spacious. Arrive, settle into our home, rest from your travels, and allow yourself to recognize that you have crossed more than an ocean. You have crossed a threshold.

In the evening, we gather for our Opening Circle, set our intentions, and create the sacred container that will carry us through Portugal.

Tonight, we break bread together for our Welcome Dinner and begin our journey as a circle.

Overnight: Lisbon

DAY 2 | LISBON
Saudade, The Memory of the Soul

Ancient Lisbon • Alfama • Sacred & Cultural Layers • The River • Fado

Today we meet Portugal through its soul.

We enter old Lisbon through winding streets, ancient neighborhoods, viewpoints, hidden corners, and the many peoples who have left their imprint here.

Phoenician, Roman, Moorish, Jewish, Christian, maritime Portugal — each civilization has added another layer to the city.

But Lisbon carries something history alone cannot explain.
The Portuguese call it saudade.
A longing for something loved, something distant, perhaps even something we cannot name.

We explore Lisbon not only as a city, but as a place of memory, departures, returns, longing, faith, and relationship with the great waters beyond.

And as evening comes, we enter the world of Fado, where longing itself becomes prayer through the human voice.

DAY 3 | SINTRA
The Living Mountain

Lisbon → Sintra • Sacred Forest • Water • Stone • Caves • Quinta da Regaleira

Today we leave the city and enter another world.

Sintra has been considered mysterious for centuries, but we journey beyond its famous palaces and romantic legends to encounter the Serra itself as a living territory.

Forest. Water. Stone. Mist. Caves. Springs. Hidden passages.

Human beings have interacted with this mountain through successive cultures, beliefs, myths, and spiritual traditions.

Within this greater landscape, we enter the extraordinary Quinta da Regaleira, with its subterranean passages, grottoes, sacred symbolism, and famous Initiation Well.

But Regaleira is only one doorway.
Our deeper initiation is into the mountain itself.

Theme of the Day: The Living Mountain

Overnight: Sintra

DAY 4 | SINTRA • PENINHA • CABO DA ROCA
Between Earth and the Great Unknown

The Serra • Peninha • Ancient Sacred Landscape • Atlantic Ocean • Cabo da Roca

We journey deeper into the Serra de Sintra.

Away from the most traveled paths, we begin listening to the landscape differently, noticing how water, stones, forests, mountains, sanctuaries, legends, and human devotion have intertwined over generations.

We make our way toward Peninha, high above the surrounding land, a place shaped by centuries of pilgrimage, sacred story, and relationship with the mountain.

Then the land begins to disappear.

We travel toward Cabo da Roca, where Europe meets the immense Atlantic.
Here, there is nowhere else to go.
Only ocean.
Only mystery.
Only the great unknown.

This becomes a powerful place for surrender, offering, and ceremony.

DAY 5 | NAZARÉ • TOMAR
The Black Madonna and the Great Waters

Sintra → Nazaré → Tomar

We leave Sintra and travel north toward one of Portugal's most dramatic encounters with the Atlantic.

High above the ocean at Nazaré lives an ancient Marian tradition surrounding Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, a Black Madonna whose story has been carried through centuries of Portuguese devotion and legend.

We explore the sanctuary, the promontory, the little Chapel of Memory, and the powerful meeting between feminine sacred presence and the immense waters below.

Later, we turn inland and continue toward Tomar.

A completely different mystery awaits us.

DAY 6 | TOMAR
The Temple Within

Knights Templar • Convent of Christ • Charola • Sacred Symbolism

Today we enter the world of the Knights Templar.

Tomar was one of the great centers of Templar presence in Portugal, and its magnificent Convent of Christ preserves layers of Templar, medieval, Christian, royal, and symbolic history.

At its heart stands the extraordinary Charola, the circular Templar church.

We explore the historical Templars while also entering the deeper archetype of the Temple.

What does it mean to guard something sacred?
What is the Grail we protect within ourselves?
What happens when the pilgrim discovers that the final temple is not a building?

Our experience of medieval Tomar continues with a very special lunch, inspired by another time.

DAY 7 | THE CAVES • VALINHOS • THE ANCIENT LADY
Into the Womb of the Earth

Sacred Caves • Valinhos • Senhora da Ortiga • Ancient & Marian Traditions
Today we descend.

We enter one of the extraordinary limestone cave systems of central Portugal, leaving daylight behind and journeying into the Earth's interior.

For human beings across cultures, caves have evoked womb, tomb, mystery, initiation, refuge, and rebirth.
From the darkness of the Earth, we emerge into another expression of the Sacred Feminine.

Rather than focusing only on the monumental sanctuary of Fátima, we seek a more intimate relationship with this landscape through Valinhos and the older local devotion associated with Nossa Senhora da Ortiga.

Here we encounter something that will appear again and again throughout Portugal:
Sacred landscapes do not necessarily disappear when religions change. Their stories transform.

DAY 8 | MONSANTO • IDANHA-A-VELHA
The Land Remembers

Ancient Lusitania • Granite • Indigenous Deities • Rome • Christianization

Today we enter one of the most extraordinary landscapes of our pilgrimage.

Monsanto appears almost to have grown from the granite itself. Enormous boulders stand beside, beneath, and sometimes within the village houses.

Here we encounter the Stone People, not as an archaeological term, but as our own invitation to experience stone as memory, endurance, presence, and ancient Earth.

But our exploration reaches beyond Monsanto.

At nearby Idanha-a-Velha, we enter a landscape shaped by ancient Lusitanian cultures, Roman occupation, changing religious worlds, and later Christianity.

We explore what history and archaeology can tell us, what survives through local tradition, and what we can only approach through attentive relationship with the land.

Late in the day, we continue south toward Évora.

DAY 9 | THE MEGALITHIC LANDSCAPE OF ÉVORA
The Ancient Ones, Before the Gods Had Names

Standing Stones • Megalithic Landscape • Ancestors • Earth & Sky

Today we travel thousands of years backward in human memory.

The countryside surrounding Évora holds one of the richest megalithic landscapes of the Iberian Peninsula.
Here, ancient peoples raised stones, buried their dead, gathered in community, oriented themselves within the landscape and heavens, and created monuments whose complete meanings remain beyond our reach.
We will not race from monument to monument.

Instead, we enter this landscape slowly.
Stone. Ancestors. Death. Community. Earth. Sky.

Standing among stones placed here thousands of years before us, we contemplate a profound mystery:
What did our ancestors know when they stood beneath these same stars?
And what does the land still remember?

DAY 10 | ÉVORA
Remember Death. Choose Life.

Ancient Évora • Chapel of Bones • Integration • Teachings

After the vast antiquity of the megalithic landscape, today we return to the human city.

Évora carries Roman, medieval, Christian, and Portuguese history within its walls.

One of our most powerful encounters will be the haunting Chapel of Bones, where mortality is placed directly before us.

But this day is not about darkness.
It is about life.

When we remember that our time here is finite, what becomes important?
What are we postponing?
What do we want to live while we are still here?

We deliberately leave more space today for integration, conversation, personal exploration, teachings, and rest.

DAY 11 | ARRÁBIDA • CABO ESPÍCHEL
Where the Mountain Meets the Sea

Évora → Serra da Arrábida • Sacred Landscape • Cabo Espichel → Lisbon

Our final great pilgrimage day brings together many of the elements we have encountered throughout Portugal.
Mountain.

Cave.
Pilgrimage.
Sacred Feminine.
Stone.
Ocean.

We enter the magnificent Serra da Arrábida, where limestone mountains descend toward brilliant Atlantic waters.
From there, our journey carries us toward the wild promontory of Cabo Espichel, a landscape of cliffs, pilgrimage, popular devotion, sanctuary, legend, and sea.

Here, at the edge of the land, we meet the Atlantic once again.
But we are no longer the people who stood before it at the beginning of our journey.
The circle is closing.
We return to Lisbon for our final night.

DAY 12 | LISBON
The Return

Integration • Closing Circle • Departures

Every pilgrimage eventually asks us to return.
But returning is not the same as going back.

This morning, we gather one final time to integrate what has been received, remembered, released, and awakened.

We honor the land that has carried us.
We honor the ancestors whose traces remain within it.
We honor the circle we created together.

And most importantly, we ask:
What am I taking home that now asks to be lived?

Our Sacred Portugal journey closes, and the journey of bringing its medicine into our lives begins.

The Journey Returns With You

Sacred Portugal does not end when we return to Lisbon.  We will have walked through forests and caves, stood among ancient stones, listened to stories carried by the land, entered temples and places of pilgrimage, met the Sacred Feminine in her many forms, and stood where mountains surrender themselves to the sea.

Yet the deepest pilgrimage has always been the one taking place within us.  We return carrying something that cannot be packed into a suitcase,
a deeper remembrance of our relationship with Earth, Spirit,
the Ancestors, and the Mystery that has accompanied humanity since the beginning of time.

We came to Portugal seeking its sacred places.

Perhaps, somewhere along the way, we will remember that the sacred place we have been seeking has always lived within us.
