Successful Trip Preparation: Communication and Transportation
By Vera Lopez
When travelling abroad to new countries, it is good to know that you can stay connected not only with family or friends, but that you have a working mobile device to use for whatever needs may arise. Likewise, today’s technology enables us to be up to date with our modes of transportation and plan our trip in the most efficient and comfortable manner.
Cell Phones and LapTops
Sometimes it’s a much better deal to get a travel phone for your trip than to bring your own overseas. Especially if you don’t have an international call plan on your phone. Other times it is better to bring your own unlocked phone so you can buy a Sim Card in the country you are visiting – getting lower rates for local calls. There are also situations where you’re going to visit a more remote area and no cell phone will be able to get service – that calls for a satellite phone.
But no matter what you need, Cellular Abroad can solve your problem! Cellular Abroad
If you decide to bring your lap-top on a trip it helps to be able to use is securely. There’s too much identity theft going on right now – and why create drama in your life by not taking care? By using Hotspot Shield you can ensure that you’re private, secure, and anonymous online! What this FREE downloadable program does is:
•Hide your IP while you’re online.
•Access all content without censorship; bypass firewalls.
•Protect yourself from snoopers at Wi-Fi hotspots, hotels, airports, corporate offices and ISP hubs.
•Works on wireless and wired connections alike.
When you are calling to and from internationally – it helps to know the proper dialing sequences and also the correct country and area codes. This nifty website will help you make sure that you are dialing your number correctly so that you don’t end up calling some place on the other side of the world from where you are intending to call! My favorite site for this info is International Country Calling Codes.
Transportation (plane, rail, etc)
It’s really helpful to know how your flights are going – and if you’re in the USA there’s a great website that allows you to have up to date information on all the delays. Flight Delay Information – Air Traffic Control System Command Center is a great site to book mark for this purpose!
If you are interested in more international flights – Flight Explorer will be able to help you out with the ability to look at specific airline flights.
If you like knowing the layout of your plane so that you can get your favorite seats – then definitely save Seat Guru in your favorites website.
If you have to change planes in international airports that you are unfamiliar with – and you are short on time – it helps to get familiar with those airports before traveling. My favorite website is the International Airport Guide and another useful site is Airport Guides.
You might be needing to travel by subway in certain international cities and if so there is also a great site for that: Subway Maps! If you have to take public transport internationally this will help: i-Metro.
And there are some of us that have a fascination with old railways – and yes – there is a website that lists hundreds of abandoned railroad right-of-ways converted to rail-trails for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and recreation called Rails-to Trails.
World Time
As our trip participants come from all over the world, here are two sites that will help you get a grip on the time changes so that can orient yourself with the time difference and let let your family and friends know not to call you in the middle of the night.
This is especially helpful when you are crossing the international date line. My favorites are: The World Clock and World Time.
